Sobeya is established in Serekunda. This vocational school is exclusively for girls. Besides the training courses for seamstress or secretary/administrative assistant, the school pays close attention to the emancipation of the pupils. The programme therefore includes sexual education and information on the dangers of HIV and Aids, while there is also much attention for ‘gender-related’ issues.
Once pupils have left the school, the school actively contacts them and if necessary it helps them to start up their own business.
The principal, Binta Sidibe, is very progressive and a strong advocate of women’s emancipation. Thanks to her input and actions, there is much attention for the position of women in Gambia.
